Meet our children!

Marcela was our first treasure to join the family.
One week after coming to us.
She was born in September, 2013, and came to us in April, 2014 just shy of 7 months old. Her syndrome remains unconfirmed, but her heart, kidney (singular), and the majority of her other organs are affected. She was severely malnourished (weighing only 7 lbs, 7 oz at 7 months old) when she came to us, and because of her medical issues, her family, though they love her very much, is unable to care for her.

She still has some health challenges, but is making great strides. Through all of this, she has remained an amazingly strong little girl. Her pediatrician has called her a miracle. Her neurologist has called her a little box of surprises (as it seems each test or new doctor we see, we find something else wrong or different about her). Her therapist has called her a fighter. I call her My Marcela. It is a privilege to be entrusted with her life and her upbringing, and though she has had a rough road, and will continue to have, I know without a doubt God has a purpose for her little life.

Marcy receives physical and speech therapy, and attends many, MANY, pediatrician, and specialist appointments. She is on a special formula as she doesn't tolerate normal formula, and does not eat sufficiently to live. She has been fed by a tube since April, 2014, and now has a permanent g-tube that allows us to feed her directly into her stomach.

She is a funny, happy baby who is working hard at catching up on her developmental milestones. And she is very smart! I'm not biased at all. ;)

Our second treasure came to us in November, 2014. Luz Maria had been abandoned at a government hospital two months before that. We don't know her name or birthdate, but the hospital gave her the name Luz, and guesses her age to be around 4.
10 days after coming to us. Her hair had been shaved at the hospital because the lice was so bad.

Little Luz is blind (though she can see a very bright light, the ophthalmologist tells me nothing can be done to improve her sight), deaf, and has seizures. The neurologist guessed her mental age to be between 6 and 8 months, but after observing her for several months we are convinced there is more to her mind. We are struggling to unlock her brain, but none of us have experience with this, and we have found it difficult to communicate with her. Nonetheless, she is very loved here with us.

She attends a local school for children with special needs, and we are blessed to have this school nearby!

Our third and fourth treasure came within 3 days of each other.

Guadelupe (affectionately known as Lupita), is 5 years old and came the beginning of December, 2014. She had been removed from her parents care because of neglect, and had been living in another children's home for quite some time.
She has Crouzon syndrome, which involves the skull and facial bones fusing together too early. She was not operated on as a baby (as was suggested). We took her to see a neurosurgeon and he said that at this point surgery is not necessary. This syndrome often causes blindness and cognitive delays, but praise God, little Lupita is of normal intelligence, and one of the smartest kids in her class, according to her teacher! She attends a nearby Christian school. Her right eye is blind, but her left eye compensates well.

Based on some of her behaviours, I suspect she has seen much hurt and trauma in her little life. Please pray for her emotional healing.

She is very loved here. She loves to help the other girls, and loves to run errands or go for a treat. She is placed with us permanently, and I am so excited to see how God will use her to touch other lives!
Lupita with her new doll, that is only hers, and "looks just like me!"

Shirley came close behind Lupita, also at the beginning of December, 2014. She is 3 years old, and suffered a very serious head trauma.
The day after she came to live with us. You can see part of the scar in her hair. This scar extends from one ear to the other. The bleeding and swelling was so bad they had to open her up completely.
Shirley came to us not able to walk, and with a very severe tremor that got worse with effort. She was only able to say "hola" and "si", and had very rapid mood swings. Though I'm sure that last observation is just a normal 3 year old! ;)

Her history is not truly known, but there is evidence that she as well, needs prayers for emotional healing.

As of February, she is walking independently! She still has tremors, but they have lessened, though they still affect everything she does, or tries to do. She is a mostly content little girl who loves to interact with others and play with her dolls. She is receiving speech therapy and physical therapy. She doesn't say many words a this point, but we hope with encouragement and speech therapy she will communicate more with us.

Our fifth treasure is Sara Ester. Also abandoned at a hospital (at approximately 3 months old), she was also given an estimated birth date, and a name.
Sara, a few days after we received her at the end of January, 2015.
Sara came to us at approximately 1 year 8 months old, from another Children's Home who wasn't equipped to handle her growing special needs. Sara has microcephaly, which basically means she has a small brain. She will be very limited in what she can do in life, but we aim to help her achieve as much as she possibly can!

She is receiving physical therapy, and has already started to move more than I thought she ever would! I am excited to see how she will grow and see what type of little girl she will become. She is a great snuggle buddy, and a very content baby. She came to us very malnourished, but now she has put on the pounds! I love to squeeze her big thighs!

If you would like to sponsor Sara on a monthly basis, please click on the "how to donate" tab at the top of the blog. Then e-mail me at hogartesorosdedios@gmail.com to let me know you have sponsored her. Thank you!

Our most recent treasure came to us in July. Leydi is almost 5, has cerebral palsy, is blind, and is malnourished. She weighs 22 1/2 pounds. Her mom is a single mom, and has had to leave Leydi alone to go work to support her family.
Leydi is a very sweet, happy little girl. She is fragile, but we see improvements already in her health and weight gain.
She smiles at the drop of a hat!
Leydi receives physical therapy twice a week, and will start speech therapy, for the extra stimulation. We are happy to have her with us, and look forward to getting to know her better.

If you would like to sponsor Leydi on a monthly basis, please click on the "how to donate" tab at the top of the blog. Then e-mail me at hogartesorosdedios@gmail.com to let me know you have sponsored her. Thank you!

We have room here for 10 little girls. We are excited to see who else God brings to live with us!
